Loops of cassette tape are moved through a transparent mechanical armature to create three dimensional line-drawn scenes of one ship's encounters with variously fantastical, formal, poetic, and personal obstacles. Each sculpture in the series depicts a single event in the ships journey through polar waters, such as One ship struck by lightning, twice, and One ship leaves the South Pole, all directions seem north. The soundtrack on the tape propels the loose narrative, and creates a tumultuous foil for the cool, calm, exterior of each piece. The video documentation cuts between the ambient sound of the gallery and excerpts of the sound heard in headphones attached to each piece.

Long Exposure Photos of Video War Games (2001-2002) - Rosemarie Fiore

These photographs are long exposures taken while playing video war games of the 80's created by Atari, Centuri and Taito. The photographs were shot from video game screens while I played the games. By recording each second of an entire game on one frame of film, I captured complex patterns not normally seen by the eye.

Visualizing meteorological, astronomical and other data with woven reed sculptures by Nathalie Emiebach

While artist Nathalie Emiebach's sculptures look like Sarah Sze got ahold of some tinker-toys, the conceptual underpinnings are far more complex. Drawing on data sets—like the distance between sun and earth or moon phases—that she collects herself, Emiebach uses the information to dictate the dimensions, shapes and position of her reed weavings.


Colorful sticks and constellations of beads represent other bits of data, like less easily quantifiable observations, such as the smell of the air.
