Plywood City (2008-2010) by Ujino Muneteru

Ujino Muneteru transforms mechanical sounds into complex rhythms. Bored by the technical limits of his instruments, the guitarist and bassist experiments with new sounds. Different sounding bodies widen the spectrum of resonance; simple mechanical motors produce new tones. In particular domestic appliances, tools, and large machinery from the fifties to the seventies play a significant role here because of their mechanical simplicity and haptic palpability. Points of reference to the Japanese "Noise Music", a type of sound movement from the eighties rooted in John Cage and the Fluxus, can also be seen...

Dead Drops Preview by Aram Bartholl
This a preview of “Dead Drops“, a project by Aram Bartholl which he started off during his ongoing EYEBEAM residency in NYC. It is an anonymous, offline, peer to peer file-sharing network in public space. Aram “injected” 5 USB flash drives into walls, buildings and curbs accessable to anybody. You are invited to go to these places to drop or find files on a dead drop. Plug your laptop to a wall, house or pole to share your files and date. Each dead drop contains a readme.txt file explaining the project. I guess the most prominent location is right next to the New Museum, the other 4 locations are listed on Aram’s website.

Nemore by fishing for compliments

Nemore is an interactive project by fishing for compliments that combines digital processing with a physical presence. The installation consists of 36 bendable poles that each operate individually, reacting to each other and users. Made from
graphite, these poles are run by two servo motors, one for rotation and one to bend the pole. in addition to this each pole has a distinct sound that builds up a chord. No sound is produced until the pole begins to move. the sound is then modulated in pitch and amplitude based on the pole’s movement. Fishing for compliments is a collaborative project between jan bernstein, max kickinger, woeishi lean and sebastian neitsch.

Shoal by Troika

TROIKA_SHOAL from Troika on Vimeo.
Troika's new public artwork Shoal combines sculpture with architecture and technology. Spanning across a 50 meter long corridor, 467 fish-like objects wrapped in iridescent colours and suspended from the ceiling rotate rhythmically around their own axis to display the movements and interdependency typical to school of fish. Shoal was curated by PAM (Karen Mills and Justin Ridgeway) and commissioned by TEDCO as a permanent installation for the Corus building located at Toronto’s Waterfront, Queens Quay East.

One ship encounters a series of notable exceptions (2006) - Joe Winter

one ship encounters a series of notable exceptions from Joe Winter on Vimeo.
Loops of cassette tape are moved through a transparent mechanical armature to create three dimensional line-drawn scenes of one ship's encounters with variously fantastical, formal, poetic, and personal obstacles. Each sculpture in the series depicts a single event in the ships journey through polar waters, such as One ship struck by lightning, twice, and One ship leaves the South Pole, all directions seem north. The soundtrack on the tape propels the loose narrative, and creates a tumultuous foil for the cool, calm, exterior of each piece. The video documentation cuts between the ambient sound of the gallery and excerpts of the sound heard in headphones attached to each piece.

Long Exposure Photos of Video War Games (2001-2002) - Rosemarie Fiore

These photographs are long exposures taken while playing video war games of the 80's created by Atari, Centuri and Taito. The photographs were shot from video game screens while I played the games. By recording each second of an entire game on one frame of film, I captured complex patterns not normally seen by the eye.

Visualizing meteorological, astronomical and other data with woven reed sculptures by Nathalie Emiebach

While artist Nathalie Emiebach's sculptures look like Sarah Sze got ahold of some tinker-toys, the conceptual underpinnings are far more complex. Drawing on data sets—like the distance between sun and earth or moon phases—that she collects herself, Emiebach uses the information to dictate the dimensions, shapes and position of her reed weavings.

Colorful sticks and constellations of beads represent other bits of data, like less easily quantifiable observations, such as the smell of the air.
